Vacation Bible School

These last two days I’ve been helping out at my church with their Vacation Bible School program. It’s a little different than most that I’ve been apart of. First of all, it’s at night so that parents who work can volunteer. Second, each day is much shorter than the average VBS that I’ve been involved with - only 2 hours and 15 minutes. Both of these things have been easy enough to get used to.

Now there is one thing in particular that has been getting on my nerves a little. It’s the way that we’ve been treating a certain group of kids. I’m not going to beat around the bush - they’re all minorities and none of them attend the church regularly. Most of them are older than the 5th grade cutoff or right at it. Because of this, none of them want to participate in what they see as little kid activities. This is understandable. But instead of telling them - “Okay, well, in a couple of weeks Andrew here is going to be leading a middle school and high school program for the entire month of July. Come back for that.”- they ask them to stay and be helpers. Now if they actually did anything to help it might not be too bad. But the honest truth is that the only kids we need help with (not an exaggeration) are these kids who have been deemed the helpers. They’re always fighting with each other. And for whatever reason, they’ve all been made helpers in the same group (there are four groups). So this one group has about 15 kids and 10 helpers, while all the other groups have about 15 kids and 2 helpers. It’s mostly because Pastor Wendy doesn’t want them to feel unwelcome by forcing them to split up. But the fact of the matter is that while they are together not only are they not helping but they’re hindering the other kids from learning anything. It’s really irritating.

This VBS thing is only for another two days, so I think I’ll make it. There’s really not all that much going on this week, or any week for that matter. I’m going to start preparing my devotions for the program I’m going to be leading. I’m not sure exactly what I’m going to be doing. I know that it’s going to concentrate on the promises of God and the way God works in a person’s life. I want God to seem real to these kids, and I figure that’s a good place to start.
