This Whole Hurricane Thing Is Getting Old

So I’m in the middle of hurricane number four. Tropical Storm Jeanne is currently hitting Tallahassee. School was not cancelled today, so I walked to my Spanish class in the pouring rain and the really strong wind. I got there and my prof cancelled class. D’oh! But it’s not all
bad. Everyone who showed up gets extra credit on their next exam. So I guess that makes it worth it. Barely.

These past few days have been pretty crazy. On Thursday the highlight wasn’t Nav Night. It wasn’t because my Bible study wasn’t good or anything; it was awesome in fact. But something even better came along. I went to a Family Group at Wesley that Vance was leading. Only in this case it wasn’t much of a group, it was me and him. So we just talked about all kinds of stuff for about a half hour. That was really cool. I would love to be able to do that more often.

Physical Therapy Is Embarrassing

“To live in ignorance of spiritual warfare is the most naive and dangerous thing a person can do. It’s like skipping through the worst part of town, late at night waving your wallet above your head. It’s like walking into an al-Qaida training camp, wearing an ‘I love the United States’ T-shirt. It’s like swimming with great white sharks, dressed as a wounded sea lion and smeared with blood. And let me tell you someting: you don’t escape spiritual warfare simply because you choose not to believe it exists or because you refuse to fight it.” — John Eldredge, Waking The Dead

So I went to physical therapy again today. Today was my first session in the Leach Center (FSU’s gym) so I had a much wider variety of workouts than usual. They all tended to be pretty embarrassing though. How so? Well one of the exercise was to do bicep curls… with 3 lbs weights! You have got to be kidding me! And of course these aren’t done in the privacy of the PT office. No way. These were done out in the open where everyone and their grandmother could see me. It was one of those situations where I just had to swallow my pride and do what I had to do.

Unidentified Puppet

Does anyone know what the heck this thing is?

I’m looking for the name of the thing, who made it, whether you had one as a kid, whether I’m sheltered for not having had one as a kid, etc. Thanks.

Elijah Is A Punk

I wanted to pass this along to you yesterday, but I didn’t have time to post a full post. This was from Vance’s sermon on Sunday. He was talking about prayer since they’re starting a week of 24/7 prayer this week. The basic structure of the message was that in prayer (a) we talk, (b) He listens, (c) He talks, (d) we listen.

Jesus’ Blood Is Crying Out

So it’s been a few days. Wanted to let everyone know that I survived Hurricane Ivan. It didn’t hit Tallahassee too hard. He had some pretty strong winds and scattered rain, but no damage or flooding or anything like that. School was canceled on Thursday as a precaution, so that was cool.

The week that was. I managed to make it through my Christian Apologist class. I feel very unintelligent in that class. Everyone knows all this stuff about Hellenism and Stoicism and Platonism and Whateverelseism and I just don’t know anything about that stuff. The whole class is based on participation but every time I participate I show the whole class just how little I know. I like the topics, but don’t like my lack of outside knowledge.

The Rob Report Doesn’t Lie

So school on Tuesday was not canceled. But I’m starting to get a little more nervous about the storm. Why? Because today I got the Rob Report. My friend Rob Hodges graduated with a degree in meteorology last spring. In his words, Hurricane Ivan “is going to mess our area up.” And this guy isn’t wrong too often. He’s like that guy in Connecticut. When Justin says it will… or whatever. So whereas before I was thinking this storm was going to be no big deal, I am now revising my opinion. This storm is going to be a big deal.

Because school for Tuesday has not been canceled I have to spend the rest of the day doing homework for Christian Apologists. Lots of reading. Fun fun fun!

Football Is Dead To Me

The football season is over.

I’m serious. The Dolphins have the best chance to go 0-16 of any NFL team in years. At the most they’ll win 4 games. The Seminoles can’t win the ACC unless they win all the rest of their ACC games and Miami loses two ACC games. Since that won’t be happening, FSU won’t be going to a BCS game unless they finish #1 or #2 in the polls, which means winning all the rest of their games. That’s something I think they can do, but it also means that the teams ahead of them all have to lose at some point. So at this point we’re playing for the right to be in some second rate bowl game.

UM 16 - FSU 10 F/OT

Tonight it hurts to be a Florida State Seminole.

I Like Jessica

So I just ended my short week. I only had 5 classes to go to in the three days we had school this week. Three of those were Spanish (got a 94% on my first test, woo hoo), so all in all it’s been an easy week.

I would like to backtrack to last week for a minute. I don’t know how I forgot to post this but I did. This was last Thursday (not yesterday, but the week before). I’m walking out of EDGE Cafe at the BCM. I’m walking in the direction of that stupid integration statue. There are cars passing on both sides of the street. It’s your typical day at FSU. All of a sudden this white car passes me, slams on the breaks and stands on the horn. I turn back thinking that someone stepped out in front of the person and they’re just a jerk about the horn. Windows roll down and it’s two girls I don’t know. Then from the driver seat out pops Jessica. This is the Jessica that I met in Italy and hadn’t seen since getting back to Tally yet. So she’s like, “Get in, we’re going to TCBY.” Um, sure? Okay. We had to stop at her dorm first, so we went to New Hall. By then though I had to be back at my place so it turned out she just drove me home. But how’s this for bizarre? She stops in the middle of a road (no traffic thankfully, though that wouldn’t have mattered) and then when we’re in the car she’s bragging about me to her friends (”You know guys, Andrew is president of the Navigators”). What’s up with that? I’m not complaining by any means, I just don’t usually get that kind of attention from people. So yeah, that totally made my day and I feel bad about not telling the world sooner. You’re awesome Jessica!

I Wish I Could Go Rafting

It has been way too long since I’ve updated. I’m sorry about that. I said I’d do better and I think I’m actually doing worse. And a lot has happened over the last few days too.

Last Thursday we we treated to a great special speaker at Nav Night who talked about reading the Bible relationally. It’s hard to put into a small paragraph just what that means so I’ll just let you take a look for yourself: http://www.saltandlightgroup.com. Lauren gave an amazing testimony, the kind that has something that everyone can enjoy and learn something from. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard better.

Friday I had my first test in Spanish since my freshmen year of high school. It was really scary, but I think I did well. The rest of the day was spent making rafting preparations.

Saturday through Monday I was in Tennessee on the Nav White Water Rafting trip. It was a lot of fun even though I couldn’t raft (bad shoulder). I like to camp, plus I really like hanging with the Navs from UF. One such UFer (sounds like an insult) named Dana is sorority sisters with one of the girls I met in Italy. The world is getting smaller all the time.
