So after many promises to not become “that guy” who never keeps his blog updated I am very much still “that guy.” It’s been a heck of a week. I’ll give you a brief summary.
Tuesday I had to give a presentation in my Christian Apologists class with my partner Jessamyn on this dude named Athenagoras. I’ve got to admit, I was pretty nervous. I was the one giving the summary on the primary text and Jessamyn was leading the discussion. I could feel my voice shaking as I was talking. Why? I am by no means an expert or even a knowledgeable person in that class. I do the reading, but there are other people in there who have read stuff like this for years (or at least it seems like that). We got through it. I’m confident that we’ll get a good grade, more confident than my partner anyway. I thought we both did well. That being said I didn’t have the guts to ask my prof afterwards.
Fast forward to Thursday now. This week at Nav Night we had our first worship night. But that’s not all that was on my plate. My parents were coming into town for Parents’ Weekend here at FSU. In fact, as we were about to start things off they walked into the lounge, so they got to here us play. That made my day. As for the music, the band played well. I made only a couple of mistakes. Rob got through despite a broken string for the better part of the night. It was Lindy’s first time playing bass in front of people and she did awesome.
One thing that I thought was funny about the night was the last song. I think it was Give Us Clean Hands. It was a song we hadn’t practiced since last spring. Rob turns to Scott and asks him to start us off but he doesn’t know how. He turns to me and asks me to start us off. I don’t know how either. So finally Rob gets us going. You’ve got to give me a break though - the last time I played that song I was playing bass. In fact I think that was the first time I’d ever played it on piano. So as not to song terrible I decided to play it safe: I put my keyboard on strings and just played chords. I didn’t want to end the night by sounding too weird.
Afterwards everyone got to meet my parents (and vice versa I suppose). They even got to meet Joel Helms who has been back from Argentina raising funds, but not consistently in Tallahassee. They were just lucky I guess.
Friday my parents and I went to the Tallahassee Antique Automobile Museum. My dad is really into old cars and as such me and my mom have grown to like them too. This collection was pretty amazing considering it’s in Tallahassee. They had a Duesenberg which is a $1 million dollar car. They had a few things from various Batman creations: two Batmobiles (one from Batman Returns and one from Batman Forever), the Batboat from Batman Forever, and the Batbike (complete with sidecar) from the 1960s TV show. They had some car from 1896. They had all kinds of Model As and Corvettes and Mustangs. Lots of rare cars too that I’m not too familiar with. They’ve got the the horse-drawn hearse that carried Lincoln’s casket. It was just a really fun afternoon.
After that we went back to campus to have dinner with every other parent that was there that weekend. But as luck would have it we were able to have dinner with Scott’s family. I wasn’t sure we were all going to meet because I knew they weren’t going to the game. It was a lot of fun meeting them.
And of course there was the game on Saturday. Holy cow it was so hot. The game started at noon. My parents couldn’t take the heat and every so often would have to walk into the inside of the stadium. I didn’t paint up but I sat next to the three guys who did, and as such I found myself on the jumbotron (big TV screen in the stadium). Speaking of the guys who painted up, they ended up on the front page of the Tallahassee Democrat (local newspaper) on Sunday. Oh, and we destroyed UNC 38-16 too.
Sunday we all went to Wesley. I think they were impressed by the praise team and Vance’s preaching. The service was on Isaiah’s calling, which was bold because it all ended with Vance telling the students, with parents sitting next to them, that it might be up to them to do some pretty bold things. A lesser pastor might have preached a “happier” sermon and waited to say something like that until next week.
My parents left and went to the airport straight from church. I’m glad they came. I had a lot of fun and I hope they did too. The next time they come to Tallahassee they’ll be watching me walk at my graduation. That’s a weird thought.
Well, I guess it’s back to reality. I’ve got a test in Spanish tomorrow and a bunch of reading to do by Tuesday. Playtime’s over.
