Welcome To NCP

I write to you today from Glen Eyrie in Colorado Springs. This is my second full day here at the Navigators National Collegiate Program. I’m on a computer in a loft that has about 8 bunk beds in what is known as the Timothy House. (I’ve got a bottom bunk. The man above me? None other than Ross Kozloski.) I’ve met a lot of really cool people here. My small team is made up of three other members and a leader. The leader is named Guido (pronounced Hheedow) and is from the Netherlands. In total I think there are 7 or 8 people from Holland who are participating in the NCP, which was a pleasant surprise. I really love getting to know people from other countries, and I thought that because I was staying in the country this summer this was not going to happen this year. But God knew my heart and has totally given me a great gift.

I’m one of only two guys working in conference services. Speaking of which, I finally found out what I do. Basically I do everything. I have a truck that I drive around (and possibly a golf cart - so hot) and I deliver things that need to be delivered, set up things that need to be set up (I might be setting up for some weddings), and if there’s a team that’s been given a lot of work that day Tim and I jump in and help them out. I think this is the perfect job for me. I am really task oriented, and I love helping other people with work when it gets to be too much. My supervisor (already forgot his name) seems cool. Yay for good boss.

So far we’ve had a lot of orientation. There’s been a lot of vision-casting from various speakers, we’ve been told the history of the Navs and of the Glen, we’ve seen really cheesy safety videos, and been given the day-to-day outline for how our weeks will go while here. We start work tomorrow afternoon.

Today, after a morning of orientation, we had a Dutch soccer (sorry, Dutch football) tournament. And I’ve made a discovery. Okay, that’s not true; I’ve reinforced a truth. I suck at soccer, by any name. I think my team would have done a lot better if I hadn’t been on it, even if I’d not been replaced. But I think we still all had a good time, and that’s why I played at all. The thin air is killing my lungs, especially after having to play three straight games.

Tonight my small team is going out to dinner to get to know each other. The other half of our team is working facilities, so I’m hoping that nights like this will bring us close since we won’t all be working together.

I think I should be able to update on a fairly regular basis. This should put my five or so regular readers at ease, and I can keep my promise to update to all the people I emailed before I left. Not bad at all. And in case I have left any doubt, let me be clear: I’m having a great time!
