It has been one crazy week. This job is tough! Especially when you’re working it alone. Most of the mornings so far I’ve been the only one working conference services in the whole Glen. So from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM I’m in charge. It has been especially difficult when dealing with a group here for a Larry Crab conference. Now don’t misunderstand. I like the guy (I got to meet him); I have no problem with him. But some of his staff can be jerks when they don’t get exactly what they want exactly when they want it. They’ve been here since last Friday and don’t leave until tomorrow. One of the many demands (sorry, requests) they’ve made this past week was to adjust the spotlights to be shining on the speaker. Doesn’t sound hard, I know. But these lights are about 15 feet in the air without any remote control. So Tim and I got the tallest ladder we could find. Still didn’t reach. So I gave Tim a mop and he wiggled the lights into place. Yeah, we’re going to be on next year’s safety video. The wedding didn’t go as bad as I thought it would. No bride-zilla. No mom-zilla. We pulled it off. I directed traffic for the majority of the festivities. (No, I didn’t have to wear an orange vest.) Tim will be gone through Sunday because he’s the best man in a wedding, so I’ll be working alone for the next few days. I’m not looking forward to it.
Jerry Bridges spoke to us last week and was awesome. He talked on the authority, authenticity, and continuity of the scriptures. A lot of it was review for me (between Navs, church, and my major) but all the same he brought a unique perspective as one who has been studying the Bible for 57 years (not a typo). We get to here him speak again in two days. We are so blessed to have him as many times as we do this summer.
On Tuesday we hiked down from Eagle Lake to Glen Eyrie, which is about a 9 mile hike. While at Eagle Lake I rode down their zip line that goes across the distance of the lake. It was an incredible feeling. While there I got to see Lauren Johnson (who I’d seen once before at the Glen) and Nikki Nedeliski. I didn’t see James Barr but evidently he saw me as I went down the zip line. The hike was really good. I hadn’t done any real hiking since I was in Italy last summer. The hiking teams were split such that there was one person from every work team in each hiking team, so we got to know people we don’t see as often. The most fun part was when we reached the Punch Bowls, which are three mini ponds right next to each other filled with freezing water. Right when I got back from the hike (and I do mean just as I got to the trail head) I got a call from Carrie Campbell who was sitting right out of the terrace of the castle (which was about a 2 minute walk from where I was standing). So I got to hang out with her for a good while. It was the second time I’d seen her out here but the first time I got to spend good time with her. All in all my Tuesday was one of the most fun days I’ve had out here.
But the day didn’t end there. Tim’s parents, who live in Colorado Springs, had invited our whole team over for dinner. I didn’t know this before but Tim’s dad went to Florida State and was involved in the Navs there in the 70s. What are the odds of that? So in all we met Tim’s parents, his sister Caroline, and two of Caroline’s friends, Leigh and Julia (daughter of one Vic Black). Guido and Christiaan wanted to stay and watch game 3 of the NBA Finals so we all watched that. It was a great way to end a great day.
Yesterday was my Sunday, and as such I took it easy. I spent most of the day reading a book out on the terrace by Jim Downing called Meditation. It’s got some really interesting ideas about how to read God’s Word, especially when it comes to meditating with your unconscious mind (I know it sounds weird but if you read the book it would make sense). Just as I was getting up to leave who should I here calling my name but the one and only Nikki Nedeliski. I didn’t get to talk to her for too long since she was meeting up with some other friends but I really enjoyed being able to listen to her for the time we had. I have always loved Nikki’s enthusiasm and heart, it’s just so contagious.
Last night most of the program went out to this local ice cream shop called Michelle’s. We took it over to a nearby park where we all sat down into a circle. This naturally developed into a hardcore game of duck-duck-goose. Yes, you heard right. A group of 20-somethings in a public park in downtown Colorado Springs were playing duck-duck-goose. And then we played red rover. So maybe we’re a little immature, but you can’t imagine how much fun it was.
Tomorrow will be an awesome day. The Dave Wirgau will be arriving with his family at the Glen at around 2 PM. I’m really pumped. So is Andy Farina, who is also at the Glen going to that Larry Crab conference (and for a vacation). So is Vic Black, who always loves to see Dave. So is Tim’s dad, who wants to meet the man in charge of the ministry at his alma mater. He’s a man in high demand, that’s for sure.
I’m going to do what I can to post a little more often. I’ve been busy, and I’ve had a lot to talk about but not a lot of time to type it up. Plus there’s only one computer so I have to tie it up for a solid 30 minutes or so when I type a long entry like this. But that’s no excuse. I’ll do better. My loyal reads, all five of you, deserve better.
