Quote of the Day #1: “You might think, more popes, more holiness. Not so, as it turns out.” — Nicole Kelley, professor of Christianity in Antiquity, commenting on the various points in history when there have been more than one pope
Quote of the Day #2: “If you’re using words what kind of words do you want to use?” — Tatia Jordan, instructor of my Article and Essay Workshop, giving those people who might be using words in their paper a useful thought to ponder
This past weekend was a lot of fun. It started off with a trip to Kyle Kozloski’s lake house for a Nav men’s retreat. It wasn’t just the FSU Navs; we had Navs from UF, USF, and UCF too. Friday night was spent watching Legends of the Fall, a movie I’ve seen a surprising number of times. We spent the remainder of the evening discussing the men in the movie, what characteristics we admired and which we wouldn’t want. Whoever chose that movie did a good job because each brother was someone that, if you had to take the whole package, you wouldn’t want to be. But each still had some character traits that you saw in yourself or would like to see in yourself. The next day we talked about what it meant to be a man according to God and what our society is telling us is important. All your typical Christian men’s conference stuff. We played a game of softball that was a lot of fun, or would have been if I was any good at softball. I went 1-5 with a run scored but all in all I was pretty lousy. My team got clobbered, but it was still a fun time. I enjoyed this conference, but it didn’t really feel like a conference. It felt like a weekend with friends and we just happened to have some things on the agenda.
Sunday brought the Super Bowl, but before that it brought grocery shopping. Now get a load of this. I went back to school on January 9. This past Sunday was only the second time I’ve been grocery shopping this semester. Why? Because no one has a car anymore! Aaron and Curtis both left theirs at home this semester. And the people who do have cars seem to always be busy. But I was literally out of everything this Sunday so I walked - yes, walked - to Albertson’s just to get the essentials. Andy took pity on me and drove me home but I was prepared to walk home as well. It’s not too terrible a walk but it’s certainly easier to drive the distance.
The Super Bowl wasn’t an epic classic by any means but it was at least a competitive game. The commercials were pretty good this year, which is the real reason I watch the game. I wasn’t a big fan of the halftime show but then again I’m a little biased, what with my utter and complete disinterest in the Rolling Stones. I watched the game over at the Larkin home, which is now all but empty as they’re preparing to sell the home. I don’t really know what to say other than that. The Super Bowl isn’t all that big of an event for me, due in large part because my team is never in it.
This week is going to be killer. Yesterday I had band practice. Today I had a pop quiz in my Business Law class, and I’ve still got two more classes to get to. I’ve got a paper due today and a lot of reading to do throughout the week. Wednesday I need to be fitted for my cap and gown, not to mention a few other random errands that need to be run. Thursday will be a night of worship at Nav Night. I guess it doesn’t sound like too much but it feels like a lot bearing down on me. I hope I can make it through this week. Things should get better by Friday.
In closing I’d like to introduce you to the coolest thing since sliced bread. Or in “things to waste my time on the internet” lingo, the coolest thing since Facebook.
