Still Stuck, But At Least My Team Won

I have no excuse for why I haven’t been posting anything recently. I’ve had the available time. I guess I just haven’t really been inspired. But there has been a lot that has happened since my last real update, so I suppose I could fill you in on a thing or two.

Connecticut - I have been in Connecticut for about three and a half weeks now. Socially speaking I have not done all that much. I’ve been out to dinner with some old high school friends once, went to a Memorial Day cookout and went hiking with a buddy from FSU who now works at ESPN. But beyond that I’ve been antisocial. I have done very little to try to make contact with my old friends up here. Of course, the other way of looking at it is that my old friends have done very little to make contact with me. I’ll be honest with you: I really don’t like having old friends. It’s not the people that I don’t like, it’s the concept. Let me explain. I am not good at keeping in contact with my friends while geographically distant from them. So each time we reunite it’s like a reboot of our friendship. We tell each other the headlines from what has happened over the past four to six months, maybe do something once or twice during that break, and then we part. Once again we do a poor job of keeping in touch and the process repeats itself upon our next reunion. That isn’t satisfying at all. It’s not friendship; it’s diplomacy. I maintain relations with such people rather than cultivate a real friendship. And I guess this time, with all that’s on my mind about my future, I’m just not up for it. If Johnny McHighschool calls tomorrow and wants to hang out I’ll hang out, but I just don’t have the necessary emotional resolve to be the initiator this time.

Job situation - No, I have not been hired by anyone yet. No, I still don’t know where I will be living come August. I am supposed to hear from AHCA sometime this week on whether they intend to offer me a position or not, though they said the same thing about last week only to push their decision back a week. Also, NavPress acknowledged by existence the other day. They sent me a post card. No joke, a post card. They’re still a legitimate possibility. I should have more real information to give on this subject by the end of the week.

Miami Heat - Okay, so I haven’t given them as much love here on my blog as I have in past seasons. I am stunned by the fact that the Heat are in the finals. I was one of the ones who said that Pat Riley was an idiot to dump his old lineup and sign a bunch of scrub stars, then dump his coach and take over himself. I was also one of the few who thought that trading for Shaq was a bad idea for the Heat. Listen, if the Heat win this finals series then I was dead wrong. But if Shaq does not bring a championship to Miami then it was a bad trade. End of story. I do not expect them to beat Dallas, I just think they’re too loaded top to bottom, but you can bet I will be sitting at the edge of my seat for every second of this series. I have been a faithful, loyal Heat fan for years. I have watched them lose on their home floor time and time again, mostly to the Knicks. Now, finally, they have a shot at the title. I’m really excited.

X-Men 3 - I am eating crow. I had been predicting for months that this would be a terrible movie. The spoiler that I read online was not entirely accurate (Colossus wasn’t bisexual, no sex scene between Storm and Wolverine, the cure didn’t kill the mutants, etc). Therefore much of what I was outraged about did not actually happen. I liked the way this movie played out for the most part. I’m glad they were angry instead of just misunderstood, even though that has been the most common complaint from the professional critics. It seems to me like the natural next step in the development of their story. I think the fact that the cure is temporary is lame, and I think the fact that Xavier stuck his mind into that comatose guy is bizarre (if you don’t know what I’m talking about you didn’t see the last scene after all the credits rolled). I am a big fan of the actor they chose to play Juggernaut and I’m mad that Jubilee didn’t even make her token classroom appearance. All the actors keep saying this is the last film, but if it isn’t they’ve set themselves up nicely for a fourth. And the Wolverine spinoff movie should be good.

The rest - I have been trying to fill my spare time with little projects. I have rebuilt an old computer for my parents. I’ve cleaned my room in a major way. I’ve done a little bit of gardening in my backyard. I’ve done my fair share of reading. Anything to keep my mind busy. I’ve done my best to stay away from the idiot box, but I admit that I watch Family Guy every night at 11:30 like I’m still in college. I’m so lame. Things will change as of Sunday. My grandmother (dad’s mom) comes into town for my sister’s high school graduation. My other grandmother will be coming about a week later. If I’m offered and take a job with AHCA I’m going to pick up the car I’m buying in St Louis, then drive to Tallahassee. So I’ll likely be here until the 24th or so. Until then I’m going to continue to try to find worthwhile things to do with my time.
