Once again there’s been a long hiatus. Once again I have no excuse. Inspiration comes at a premium these days I suppose. Here’s what’s been going on in my world.
Job Situation - If no news is good news, inversely that would mean that news is bad news, right? Well, that seems to be the case when it comes to my job search. I am still very unemployed. I was turned down for the position at AHCA that I interviewed for before I left Tallahassee. I have to admit, I was pretty surprised. I thought that job would have been a gimme. But I wasn’t what they were looking for. On all other fronts I’ve heard no news, despite all my efforts. I hope patience really is a virtue, because when this is all said and done I’m going to be mighty virtuous. Or broke in a gutter somewhere.
Miami Heat - I’m shocked that the Heat beat the Mavs in the finals. I tend to side with those who question why Wade got as many calls as he did. I know stars get calls, but seriously, it was getting ridiculous. I only bring it up because I would have liked to have won this series without any real controversy. But with that and the Stackhouse suspension and the phantom timeout one really has to wonder. Whatever. What’s done is done. I am very happy for Alonzo Mourning, who deserved to win a championship more than anyone else on either team. He put up with a lot of Heat teams that always seemed to be one piece - and won win over the Knicks - away from greatness. On the flip side I’m still trying to figure out how a guy like Antoine Walker, who I still can’t stand, now can call himself an NBA champion. Overall, it’s still a strange feeling. I was like this when the Marlins won in ‘03. My team wasn’t predicted to win, for very legit reasons a lot of people felt the other team deserved to win, and yet my team won. I guess it’s better than finishing second. Today at the parade in Miami Shaq said that he thought the Heat could, at worst, take two of the next four championships before his current contract runs out, after which he’ll likely retire. He’s out of his mind. But as long as we’re on the Shaq topic I may as well admit it: I was dead wrong about the trade. I thought it was a bad idea, that the Heat wouldn’t win a championship with him. Now I’m not going to say that he “brought” the championship to Miami. I think mostly what he did was draw double teams and encourage the heck out of Dwayne Wade, but in the end that was enough.
RHAM High School Graduation - My sister Alison graduated from high school on Wednesday night. She was Salutatorian of her class, but that’s not telling the whole story. The top three people of this class all had higher GPAs than any of the previous Valedictorians in the school’s history. She gave a pretty darn good speech too. It was typical Alison - very honest and cynical beyond her years. She closed by saying that if one of her fellow classmates saw her years from now across a crowded room she hoped they wouldn’t turn and walk the other way. I thought that was strange, but then I thought about my own behavior. I saw a few people at that graduation ceremony from the class of ‘02 (none of which I was all that close to during my two years at RHAM) but made no effort to go speak to any of them. She might be on to something there. The Valedictorian, a girl named Kait, is a good friend of hers. In fact, the top five or six kids in her class were all pretty close. Anyway, instead of giving your standard cliche speech Kait sang a medley of songs that expressed her emotions. Very unique, and what a voice! I think my favorite non-speech moment of the evening was when my old buddy Gus Billard hugged everyone on the stage when he walked up to get his diploma, including the superintendent, who as far as I know doesn’t know him. Very funny, good enough to earn him the front page of the local newspaper. All told it was a good ceremony. I think Alison’s just happy it’s over; I know she was dreading giving her speech for days. I did take a video of the speech, but I’m not going to upload it unless Alison tells me I can. If you want to encourage her one way or the other in her decision, send her an email: al0315@comcast.net.
Mowing the Lawn - Why does this get it’s own special bullet? You’re going to think I’m really lame, but yesterday was the first time I ever mowed a lawn. I know, I know, spoiled this, lazy that. I’m telling you, it’s not my fault. I actually had to ask my dad if I could mow it. My whole life my dad has worked at a desk. He likes to mow the lawn to get exercise. I never complained when I was growing up; one less thing for me to do. But since this fall I may be living in a house, and said house has a lawn, I figured it was time to learn. So now I know. It was an enlightening experience, I assure you.The rest - It’s been fun having my grandmothers up here to visit. My dad’s mom just flew home this afternoon, and my mom’s mom will be here for another week or so. Unfortunately, over the past few weeks everyone in my family has been fighting off a cold. I think I’m just now starting to come down with it. Yuck. And on top of that, my bedroom is currently the guest room, so I’ve been sleeping in the basement. More yuck. And if that wasn’t bad enough, it’s supposed to rain all weekend. Argh! Here’s hoping it doesn’t turn out to be as bad as it sounds.
