Leading Off - The freshmen are coming! The freshmen are coming! Yesterday at 9 AM all the dorms on campus opened, which means that the Fall 2006 semester is officially underway. Well, not from a scholastic perspective, but from a ministry perspective. I have yet to make my first appearance in Dorman Hall, but that should happen later today.
Job Situation - I will be starting work at the Department of Elder Affairs this Friday. This new is awesome for two reasons: (1) it means that I can hang out with freshmen in Dorman Hall for nearly all of freshman week, and (2) it means I finally know when I’m starting! I was sent at email with forty-one attachments — forty-one! — to read up and learn about all the various procedures. I’m pretty excited about how things worked out.
Living Situation - I will not be moving into the old Larkin home like I originally thought. Instead I will be moving into a guest house owned by the same landlord. This house is smaller, only two bedrooms, but has a much cheaper rent and has been completely redone this summer. The Larkin house will be rented by a family that needed three bedrooms. So it’ll be just me and Darren in what is already being affectionately called “The Shack”. (I’ve been told that if I stay there for any length of time it will be called Shack Special, following in the Special tradition.) Like I said, it’s a guest house for a larger house that’s right next door. That house is being occupied by five freshmen girls. And it’s not like I can just ignore them: that’s where I’ll be doing my laundry. Yeah, I’m going to be needing some prayer in this department.
Villa Special Facelift - I’ve been staying at Villa Special for the past couple of weeks. On Friday night James, one of the three residents, got back into town. Now that all three people living there full time had come back to Tallahassee they could begin to talk about what they wanted the place to look like inside this year. My part in this is that I’ll be leaving there soon and I wanted to bless them in some way for all their hospitality. So I spent yesterday helping them clean and redecorate their living room. James and I, in his new pickup, went to a carpet store that gives away remnents. We found this terrible looking orangish, yellowish shag carpet. The scary thing is that it was perfect! It goes great with their bright orange couch! So we rolled up as much of that as we could and took it with us. We spent the rest of the day removing the ’70s motiff off the walls of their living room, reorganizing their entertainment center, sweeping and mopping the floor, and finding homes for all the random junk in the room. The day ended with the laying of the carpet, followed by moving the couches back into position. We were up until after 2 AM getting it just right. I have to tell you that I’m really jealous. I worked hard on that room and I don’t even get to live there! It looks great. If you have a chance to spin by and take a look you really should.
The rest - I’m battling a pretty nasty cold at the moment. Runny nose, sneezing, sinus headaches, the works. It’s coming at a bad time too; I need my energy to meet these freshmen. I’ll keep you posted on how all that goes. I’m really excited about what could happen there this year.
