SHINE Leadership Meeting

Leading Off - I have a major case of the Mondays today. It didn’t come on until after attending a staff meeting not too long ago. I was doing fine. I was actually feeling good. Now I’ve got a headache and I’m wondering if my watch and every other clock in the office is wrong.

Elder Affairs - So as I mentioned in my last update, I went on my very first business trip last week. It was in Tampa and it was for a SHINE leadership meeting. It was… well, let’s see. Fun would be far too strong an emotion. Educational would be an out and out lie. I think the best word would be different. Yeah, it was different, in many ways. I was out of my cube, which I’ve decided is the best part about business trips in general. I was dealing with my coworkers on a quasi-personal way since I ate meals with them and was staying in the same hotel as them. I put faces to names for all the PSA liaisons and many of the volunteers, which was surprisingly enjoyable. I find it strange to correspond with people that I’ve never met.

The best part of the trip for me was when I got to speak on Wednesday. I have to say, I really think God is going to use me somewhere where I’m in front of crowds because I’ve gotten to the point where, regardless of the demographic or topic, I can communicate information very effectively. And I don’t even feel like that’s my strongest way of communicating! I’m much more comfortable writing things out than I am speaking. But I wasn’t just informative; I was entertaining. Well, as entertaining as the information would allow. If you’ve ever been to a Nav Night where I was giving announcements or a testimony, just imagine my usual goofy on-stage personality, only instead of something ministry- or Bible-related it was about data entry. The crowd was engaging. They had a lot of good questions for me. And that’s why I think it was the best part of the trip: because they really cared about what I had to say and what I knew and it showed. I know I’m not in Tallahassee because of my job, but it’s a very good feeling to have people want to talk about your expertise within your profession, even if a well-trained ape could hold that profession.

There were some negatives about the trip, but you never know who could be reading this, so I think it would be prudent of me to censor myself. If you want some of those stories you’ll have to ask for them personally.

Quote of the Day - “We’re going to play two new songs, then two old songs, then two new songs, then two old songs, then one new song, then one old song, and then we’re all going to a frat party!” - Bradley Hathaway

The Happy Fun Tour - Last night I went to the Wesley Foundation to see a poet/singer named Bradley Hathaway perform. He had a full band playing behind him, even during his spoken word. He is a very talented guy. I was impressed and want to hear more now that I’ve had a taste. Most of his stuff dealt with self-image and love. I sort of get the feeling those are two things he’s struggled with, just by the content of his writing. I would totally recommend you check him out if you get the chance. His website is thebradley.net.

The rest - This week is a short week! No work on Friday! Hurray for veterans! I’m not sure how I’ll be spending my day off. Thursday night I’ll be at a bon fire for Nav Night, which may or may not be a campout, so what time I get home from that might dictate what my Friday plans are. If you’re planning something for the weekend that has room for one more let me know.
