Mark Your Calendars

How great is it that the two days I’ve been looking forward to since the beginning of the summer will take place back-to-back! First of all, on Thursday, October 25 Scrubs will begin its seventh and final season. Remember all the drama from the season six finale? Look for it at 9:30 PM on NBC, right after that other show people seem to like.

Then, on Friday, October 26 at 6 PM the world will at long last have access to Mac OS X Leopard. The announcement was just made today. I didn’t want to buy a Mac before their new OS came out, so now I finally feel the freedom to become a Mac owner.

Now, where will I be during these two events? Well, on Thursday I’ll be wrapping things up at Nav Night after a night of worship, likely making plans to go to Steak & Shake or Coldstone or something like that. Who knows that I’ll be doing Friday, but it won’t involve me being in line for Leopard or my new Mac. You see, the Mac I want doesn’t currently exist, but there are rumors that it will be made in January.

But in spite my lack of participation I’m still really excited!

Where My Ears Have Been

I’ve wanted to write this post for a while but haven’t made the time for it. Since the beginning of the summer I’ve been trying to expand my horizons when it comes to my choices of music. I had gotten myself into a bit of a rut, only listening to the bands and singers I already knew about. You see, I don’t listen to the radio because I can’t stand it. Even Christian radio. Especially Christian radio.

I’ve really soured on the Christian music industry in recent years. I guess I’m just sick of songs fitting into one of two categories: (1) Christian pop that is musically inept and lyrically shallow, or (2) worship music, much of which is either poorly made or just a rehash of a song that’s been recorded by a dozen other artists. Plus when it comes to worship music I don’t like to listen to it unless I’m actually going to be concentrating on God and His character. If I’m just typing away at my desk or I’m hanging out with friends and want some music in the background I don’t want worship music because my attention will be elsewhere.

I’ve recently rejoined the world of secular music. I know, I know. Blasphemy. Don’t worry though, I’m not listening to anything too sketchy. I wanted to blog about some of the great artists I’m now listening to. I’ll give you three names today with more to come later.

FSU Navigators Staff Team

Back: Me, Kyle, Dave, Luke
Front: Helen, Martha, Alyssa, Nicki

I thought since many of the ministry stories I write this year will include my teammates it’d be good to toss up a team photo. This was taken last night in Kellum Hall, one of the freshmen dorms on campus, as we hosted a football party in the main lounge. Luke and Kyle are my roommates. Alyssa, Nicki and Helen are my next-door neighbors. Dave and Martha are the staff couple who have been ministering at FSU for over 20 years.

Five Weeks In

Quote of the Day #1: “Is this where Satan eats?” — Chris Gatlyn, USF Navigators staff who can’t stand it when the different foods on his plate touch, describing a Vietnamese restaurant whose specialty involves mixing a variety of different foods

Quote of the Day #2: “Walk back over there.” — April Flores, USF EDGE Corps staff, to Dave Wirgau as he was pacing; he had an idea on one side of the room but forgot it on the other side

So I’ve been working this Navigators gig on campus for five weeks now and I have to say that it’s been a veritable roller coaster ride. You have to understand that the first month of school is always going to be the craziest, both for the students and for any organization on campus. You’re constantly meeting new people, your schedule is a complete mess, and you just hope to God that eventually things will begin to slow down and become a little more normal. I don’t want to jinx it, but I think we are about to reach that state of normalcy here in Tallahassee. But before I forget everything that’s happened up to this point let me tell you a little about what’s been going on around here.
