Pardon My Dust

I know most of my readers view my posts through Facebook, so this announcement probably doesn’t impact that many people. Nevertheless, it would be remiss of me not to mention that I have been updating my website recently. If you’re keeping score at home, I’m calling this new iteration version 4.1 beta.

I was still using WordPress 2.1.3 and needed to upgrade to WordPress 2.3.2. It doesn’t sound like much, but when you hear about Al Gore’s website being hacked because he was using an old version of WP you realize that it might be worth spending a couple of hours to install the new version. The install itself took only a couple of minutes, but during an upgrade the biggest strength of WP becomes its biggest headache. Many of the plugins I used on the previous version of my site wouldn’t work with the upgrade, forcing me to either download an updated version of that plugin or find another one that did essentially the same thing.

The good news? Most every vital system on my site is back up and running. In fact, before this upgrade my photos section had stopped working and now I’ve gotten that fixed. I still have to import my post tags from the Ultimate Tag Warrior plugin to the built-in WP tagging system, but I’ve read how that’s done and it doesn’t sound too hard. The bad news? Two of my favorite features aren’t working too well right now. My ‘Articles’ section, where you can find my best and favorite posts from the past four years, is a real mess. My ‘Archive’ section, once my pride and joy, is having all sorts of problems. I’m sure there’s probably some other things that are broken that I just haven’t found yet.

I know what the problem is with both of these pages, which is also good news. I may have even found a fix for the Archive page. Hopefully everything will be back to normal soon.
