Last night I went to a midnight presentation of The Dark Knight. It’s the first time in over a year that I’ve gone to a midnight premiere (the last time was for Transformers). It’s also the first time all summer I’ve selfishly taken advantage of the fact that I don’t have to go to my office job until 12:30 PM each day. I want to give you some of my impressions, but without giving away any of the plot for the majority of you who probably still haven’t seen it. But before I even do that I want to tell you the story about how I managed to get tickets at the last second.

So I was shooting the breeze this morning on MySpace (remember, Monday is my day off) and I found myself on Zach Braff’s profile page. As many of you know I have become a huge fan of his show Scrubs in recent months. On his profile he has this YouTube video clip from a Scrubs rehearsal of a scene I had never seen before (and I’ve seen every episode). But it soon became clear to me why I hadn’t seen it before. Each time I watch this video I smile from ear to ear. Even if you aren’t a fan of the show you’ll like this.
How great is it that the two days I’ve been looking forward to since the beginning of the summer will take place back-to-back! First of all, on Thursday, October 25 Scrubs will begin its seventh and final season. Remember all the drama from the season six finale? Look for it at 9:30 PM on NBC, right after that other show people seem to like.
Then, on Friday, October 26 at 6 PM the world will at long last have access to Mac OS X Leopard. The announcement was just made today. I didn’t want to buy a Mac before their new OS came out, so now I finally feel the freedom to become a Mac owner.
Now, where will I be during these two events? Well, on Thursday I’ll be wrapping things up at Nav Night after a night of worship, likely making plans to go to Steak & Shake or Coldstone or something like that. Who knows that I’ll be doing Friday, but it won’t involve me being in line for Leopard or my new Mac. You see, the Mac I want doesn’t currently exist, but there are rumors that it will be made in January.
But in spite my lack of participation I’m still really excited!
The general consensus in the blogosphere is that writing a bad post is far worse than writing no post at all. This is probably true about all writing. With that in mind, I have tried to write this synopsis a couple of times already but each time it has felt stale. The fact is it’s all been said before. Season six of 24 didn’t measure up to season five. The character interactions were awkward. The Bauer family’s involvement was simply too hard to believe. The creativity that defined the series as innovative television was absent from this season.
I’ve tried to look at season six from a big picture point of view rather than as its own entity, and when I do that a lot of the decisions made by the writers make sense. I don’t think people understand what this season was for. Season six, like season three, was a bookend. It needed to bring stories — and characters — to a close. Allow me to explain.
I just realized that three out of the first five posts in my new blog will be about Jack Bauer (one last week, this one and the one I intend to write tomorrow). I’m not turning this into a 24 blog; it’s just that time of year.
Tonight is the two-hour season finale. I wanted to go on record as to what I think will happen tonight. This season I’ve been pretty accurate when it come to making predictions, but I’ve yet to make any in writing. So here they are.
Today I came across this article on CNN.com about the future of the most exciting show on television. In addition to announcing that the show will continue for another two seasons, it was hinted that Jack Bauer and his friends on 24 will be in for some changes starting next season.
The upcoming re-invention of the series was something the producers have talked about for a while, [executive producer/showrunner Howard] Gordon said.
Aside from Sutherland, “24″ will return with a new cast (some old favorites might return in different roles) and a new, non-Los Angeles location, with the producers even contemplating telling the story from two locations.
Leading Off - I miss spring break. FSU just had theirs last week and I really could have used it. Granted, my boss has been out of town for a while so my days at work have been very run-of-the-mill. That’s sort of a break, right? But I miss having a week in the middle of spring where I could sleep in and choose to do as much or as little as I wanted.
My Pseudo Spring Break - That being said, I still had a break from a lot of my normal routine. Without students in town there was no Bible study to go to, no Nav Night to attend. I could leave for work a few minutes later because traffic was nonexistent. So yeah, there were some nice perks.
Leading Off - I’m in charge! You do what I say! Okay, so that’s not exactly the way things are. In all honesty, I have no authority whatsoever. But my boss and a lot of my coworkers are in Orlando for the next few days and, in terms of housekeeping, I’m in charge. So it’s not much more than taking calls for people and making sure the folks still in the office are all here. But I’ve got to take encouragement where I can get it at work sometimes and the fact that my boss trusts me enough to do this is pretty encouraging.
Ski Trip - It turns out there was enough snow in North Carolina to make the Nav ski trip a real ski trip. (Now, I wasn’t going to ski either way so it really didn’t matter to me.) I’m pretty sure my favorite part was the car ride there and back. Ten hours each way in the man van. Anytime you put Joe and Rob in an enclosed area that they can’t leave incredible things will be said and done (and by incredible I mean a plethora of things, not all of which should be put in print). I ended up not doing much of anything on Saturday, mostly because I woke up as everyone was leaving to go do their thing. So I sat around the church and read for a few hours. That was fine by me. In fact, my one real worry about going on this trip was that I wouldn’t have some down time that I felt I desperately needed. Sunday was spent hiking, hanging out on a giant rock with a great view, going to a Chinese buffet for dinner, and praying for ASU on their football field. Lots of fun, all around. I even have a few photos up on Facebook.
Leading Off - This has been a surprisingly slow week for me considering it’s the first week of classes and all of the students have just returned. I haven’t yet been on campus with the exception of last night’s Nav Night. That’s probably not a good thing.
So, Who’s At Fault? - To give a brief update on the whole car situation, I received good news from my insurance company. The adjuster agreed with me that the accident was the woman’s fault. I mean, after all, she hit me. This is a particularly interesting development since I was the one who received the citation. I bet the woman is pretty confused, probably angry too. I was very thankful. The bill to get my car fixed and to pay the deductible to get her car fixed would have been a very large bill for me. As it is I’m just stuck with a citation that’ll cost around $120. That’s not fun, but it could have been much worse.
Leading Off - The good news is that next fall Florida State Navs will indeed have a full EDGE Corps team (assuming, of course, they raise the necessary support). This is great news for the ministry, and I’m really excited about what all God is going to do through them. The bad news is that this probably means I will be living either by myself or with people I don’t know this fall (assuming, of course, I return to Tallahassee).
No Room In The Inn - Allow me to paint you a picture. Dave, the Nav head staff, owns two houses and a duplex that he rents out to students. The original idea was to have half of the duplex with the EDGE men and the other half with other guys who needed a place to live. I would have probably been one of those guys, since the other two houses are full and because I would like to live in one of these heralded communities. The EDGE women were going to live with an alumni who last year was prepared to house them when we thought we were getting a team then. A couple of weeks ago something changed. Either this alumni changed her mind due to some set of circumstances or maybe Dave only assumed the women would be living with her instead of solidifying a strong confirmation. I don’t know, and it’s really a moot point. The bottom line is the EDGE women will be living on the other side of the duplex. Which is actually a pretty cool ministry setup, having the whole team live in the same complex. But it does leave me without a place to live in the fall. Don’t misunderstand - I never signed a lease or anything. There was just an understanding that if there were a place available that I would probably be the one to fill it. So now, even if I do manage to find a job in Tallahassee, my next struggle will be to find a place to live.
