Geek

Blog posts about the social Internet, mobile apps and hardware, and computer software and hardware. This is where I show off my inner geek.

New FSU Navigators Website

I’m pleased to announce that the FSU Navigators have a brand new website thanks to yours truly. It was a lot of work but I have to admit I had a lot of fun designing it. It uses WordPress and K2 just like my personal site. The best part of all is that all the hosting is free! The Navigators Internet Ministries hooked us up with some free server space from Gospel.com. Big props to Randy Susman, Director of the Navigators Internet Ministries, for working with me for the past two months trying to get this thing up and running. We’re using the same address: fsunavigators.org. Go check it out and let me know what you think. EDIT: The FSU Navigators are no longer being hosted by Gospel.com.

Pardon My Dust

I know most of my readers view my posts through Facebook, so this announcement probably doesn’t impact that many people. Nevertheless, it would be remiss of me not to mention that I have been updating my website recently. If you’re keeping score at home, I’m calling this new iteration version 4.1 beta.

Top Five Facebook Applications of 2007

I wrote this post when the Facebook Developer Platform had just launched. Things have changed drastically since then. All the apps I have described here have either been deprecated or function in vastly different ways. Furthermore, those that continue to function are not anything special, nor are they that powerful. I have left this post on my website for posterity’s sake only.

A few weeks back Facebook opened its doors to third-party developers to make applications that would integrate with its new f8 platform. There are now almost 1100 applications floating around for users to add to their profiles. Most of these apps are complete garbage, but a few are worth adding to your profile. Since I spend a scary amount of time on that website it would be remiss of me if I didn’t tell you about the apps which I’ve grown especially fond of.

Before diving into the list let me explain it a little further. These apps aren’t necessarily the best Facebook applications available. I haven’t tried them all, but these are my favorites of the ones I’ve tried. They’re also not the most popular apps out there, but I figure that’s all the more reason to give them a little love. So here they are, in no particular order.

I need to tell this story from the beginning. It all started in Colorado (cue the harp and blurry flashback fade).

I was out at iNFO training listening to another presentation. This one was about newsletters. Molly, the presenter, made a brief comment about getting a CampusNavs email address to include in our letters. It would look professional and could be setup to forward all messages to our actual email accounts. Being the computer geek that I am I took note of this little factoid and made sure to get an account when I got home.

Now flash forward a couple of days. I was on Facebook wasting my time when it occurred to me that the Navigators just might have a Facebook network I could join with my new email address. So I browsed the list of work networks and, sure enough, there listed was a network for the Navigators. So I entered my email address and clicked Join Work Network. But instead of adding the network I get a message on my screen saying my email address does not correspond to any existing work network.

Exploring Facebook Marketplace

Earlier this week Facebook added a new feature called Marketplace to its site, most likely to compete with Craigslist. It’s nothing more than online classified for Facebook users. Since I use every other feature on Facebook I figured this one was worth a look. When I first heard the name I thought it was going to adopt a similar platform to eBay: the user would pay to list an item and Facebook gets a cut of the final selling price. I dug into the Help section and the Facebook Marketplace Guidelines to learn more.
