Problems At Home

Leading Off – I must say, I wish I was a student again. I was never this tired or this stressed out when I lived in the dorms and I was taking classes. Every time I go back into Kellum or Dorman I see people freaking out about the things they have to do, the way I used to freak out about the say types of things, and I just want to tell them, “Just wait.” People were not meant to be locked away in a cube for eight hours a day. It’s not natural.

Living Situation – This morning before I left for work I found out that my roommate Darren will not be my roommate for much longer. He’ll soon be moving out to move in with his parents in Jacksonville. The move is a smart financial one for him. It creates an interesting situation for me though. He’s trying to find someone to take on his part of the lease. At the moment it looks like it’ll be Lorenzo, the guy who’s been sleeping on our couch for the past three weeks. He’s got an interesting story, this Lorenzo fellow. He spent three years at a Bible institute in Tampa, has more scripture memorized than I do, but the Word hasn’t seemed to impact his heart. I’m torn about him moving in for a couple of reasons. He doesn’t seem to be moving out any time soon, so it will be good to be able to treat him like a roommate instead of like a guest. I’ve felt weird about laying down the law to my roommate’s guest, so I usually get Jacob to do it in the name of responsibility. Jacob and I have had to talk about Lorenzo on a variety of topics already including keeping his porn out of the living room, keeping his pot out of the house, and cleaning up the mess he makes of the place.

FSU vs Troy

Leading Off – I feel like this week has been going on for at least a month. I never thought Friday would come, and I certainly never thought quitting time would be upon me. Here are a few highlights from the week that was.

FSU vs Troy – Okay, so not exactly a highlight, but worth mentioning. FSU should have lost. Maybe the entire coaching staff would have been fired, including Bobby. That’s right, I don’t like Bobby Bowden. You know what I say? “What have you done for me lately?” He’s great for recruiting, I’ll grant you that. But he’s useless on the sidelines, and his son is even more useless as the offensive coordinator. But anyway, Troy played a great game and FSU played a terrible one. I really like Troy’s QB. He was able to throw on the run, something all of our most recent QBs have tried to do with limited success.

Five Years

It’s hard to believe it’s been five years.

Good Monsters

Leading Off – There’s a lot a could talk about today. Sports, for instance. I could mention the Marlins pitcher throwing a no-hitter two days ago. I could talk about the Dolphins coming up short against the Steelers. I could talk about the things going on in my life. I could talk about the new job or the new roommates and how each of them is progressing. Or I could even go spiritual and talk about meeting one-on-one with Jacob or about Nav Night. But no. Today there’s only one thing to talk about.

Good Monsters – Let me be as clear as possible. If you only buy one CD this year, make it Good Monsters by Jars of Clay. I’m absolutely astonished. Now please, I know you’re likely to think I’m a little biased, and you’re probably right, but I’m trying to come at this from an objective point of view. True, I am a huge Jars fan (some call us jarheads) but I’m also a musician and I know what it takes to create even one good piece of music. And I’m telling you, this CD has twelve incredible songs.

So Many Beginnings

Leading Off – It has been a very busy time in my life over the last couple of weeks. I started work, I’ve moved into a new place, a new season of ministry has started. It seems like I’ve always got something to do these days.

Elder Affairs – The job is going well. That is, I understand everything that I’m supposed to do and I’m doing it. I like the people I’m working with. The commute isn’t too bad. But… I spend eight hours a day in front of a computer screen. Which has it’s pros and cons, to be sure. Let’s face it, I’m a major introvert. I get worn out easily if I’m around people for too long. So by the time I leave work I’m ready to party! I was downright animated at Nav Night last Thursday. I guess I wish I had a little more interaction with people here at work though. I don’t even see Liz or Helen much just because I sit in the back end of the back cube row. I rarely have a reason to leave my space; they rarely have a reason to come back here. But all in all I like my job. It may not be exciting but it’s within my capabilities and it’s paying the bills. It’s a blessing from God and I can’t let myself forget that.

Anticipation

Leading Off – The freshmen are coming! The freshmen are coming! Yesterday at 9 AM all the dorms on campus opened, which means that the Fall 2006 semester is officially underway. Well, not from a scholastic perspective, but from a ministry perspective. I have yet to make my first appearance in Dorman Hall, but that should happen later today.

Job Situation – I will be starting work at the Department of Elder Affairs this Friday. This new is awesome for two reasons: (1) it means that I can hang out with freshmen in Dorman Hall for nearly all of freshman week, and (2) it means I finally know when I’m starting! I was sent at email with forty-one attachments — forty-one! — to read up and learn about all the various procedures. I’m pretty excited about how things worked out.

The Laborers Are Two

Leading Off – I may have a job, but I’m still not working yet. I have not received a call from my boss regarding my start date. And I’ve still not found a third roommate. So I’m in limbo at the moment. It’s a lot less stressful than the limbo I was in up in Connecticut; at least I have a job and a place to stay. But still, it would be nice to make some forward progress.

The Laborers are Two – The one nice thing about not working is that I’ve been able to spend time with the two EDGErs who have raised the necessary funds to come to campus. As I type this in Strozier library I’m sitting next to Alyssa and across from Luke. Luke has a blog that you should check out: http://lukeskeen.blogspot.com. I’ve spent the last few days getting to know them, moving them into the Projectz, and praying with them for the campus. At last update, both John and Stephanie have raised about 40% of their funding. They need 75% in order to report. Please be praying for them and, if so led, give to their fund raising efforts.

The Interview

Leading Off – I am among the employed! You are reading the words of the newest employee of Florida’s Department of Elder Affairs. Look out paper, you’re about to get pushed!

The Interview – I had the interview on Tuesday. First, I have to comment on my suit. Every time I wear a suit I feel like I’m wearing a Halloween costume. It’s just not me and I feel like it’s painfully obvious to whoever sees me. But anyway, my interview was at 9 AM, bright and early. It was by far the most low-key interview I’ve had throughout this whole job search process. It went a little something like this:

1) He told me what the DOEA was about
2) He asked me to describe myself
3) We toured the office
4) He offered me a job

I wish they’d all been that easy, even if they didn’t all end with a job offer. He gave me until Thursday to make a decision. I thought it over on Wednesday, but there really wasn’t much to consider. I need a job, plain and simple. My new boss will be out on leave until Wednesday, so when he gets back we’re going to talk about start date and finalize a starting wage.

From Connecticut to Florida by Way of Missouri

Leading Off – I have returned to Tallahassee! I arrived yesterday afternoon after making the long trip from St. Louis. The trip wasn’t all that bad. Here’s how it went down.

Nate Griffin’s Revenge – So before I left on my trip I had to go the the Connecticut DMV. I needed to get a registration for my car in my name for the trip down, even though I’m almost immediately going to turn around and need one in Florida. This was a tricky operation. Connecticut is really anal about getting vehicles inspected and normally won’t give you a registration without first checking your car out. But I found out that there’s such thing as a transit registration, which is what I thought I needed to get. They’re good for 30 days. So I went down there, asked for the proper paperwork, filled it out, and went up to the counter. They gave me a registration that was good for 10 days. Sadly I didn’t notice this until I was already halfway out the door, so I had to get back in line to ask what the deal was. It turns out that a transit registration is only good if I was going to buy a car in another state and bring it back to Connecticut. But since I wasn’t going to do that the state figures they’ll stick it to you as you’re leaving. It’s not that big a deal. It just means that registering my car in Florida is now higher on my priority list.

State Of The Andrew Address 2006

State Of The Andrew Address 2006

To my family and friends,

I hope this letter finds you well. First, before I get to new business I feel I should get us all on the same page. This past April I graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in religion. I knew this summer was going to be very different compared to those since I began college. In past years I had participated in training programs, mission trips, and study abroad programs, but I felt it prudent to devote this summer to finding a job. That has been my mission since the first of May.
