An Ugly Heart Observed

In this episode I share thoughts on how the Gospel impacts our actions in day-to-day lives and how forgetting the Gospel leads to an ugly heart. Sorry for the mumbling and low volume. I wasn’t entirely awake yet when I recorded this episode.

Rough Thoughts on Psalm 102

I haven’t had too much time to process these thoughts–or any other thoughts in recent times for that matter–but in this episode I’m going to share some first impressions. Yesterday my pastor gave a message on Psalm 102 that I found to be especially applicable to my year. I also give a brief update on my ridiculously busy month.

A New Way to Introduce Myself

Personal Page

I really dig this new page I whipped up. It’s on a subdomain of my website: whois.andrewledwith.net. I intend to use it as a way to introduce myself to people via the web. If I ever get around to having some calling cards printed I intend to include this page’s address on those cards (or possibly a short domain that points to this page).

Even though my blog is my primary web property it’s not exactly a great way to find out who I am and what I’m all about in a hurry. The first content you see on my blog is whatever I’ve been writing recently. Yeah, the About Me page is just a click away, but even that page is about me in relation to the blog. This is much more general. Plus, I think this new page is a lot more striking than my intentionally minimalistic blog.

I made this page using The Personal Page, a great template developed by Naz Hamid. This is the first time in a while that I’ve made a website without using WordPress. I’m pretty sure the first person I saw using this template was Chris Bowler. The photo is by Bryan Zhang. I’ve been getting a lot of mileage out of this shot, using it on my new Nav prayer card and several places on the web.

Let me know what you think of my new personal page.

Casting a Vision

In this week’s episode I talk about my recent experience casting a vision for the Wildwood Young Professionals. I candidly share my dislike for the role in general and how I’m really just imitating what I’ve seen others do. I also give a brief update on my property management situation.

I will eventually start using a better microphone. Sorry for the crackling. Also, sorry for my loud roommates.

Engagement Safari

Watch on Vimeo: Safari Engagement

Lionel Worthington, star of the Campus Safari videos, was part of his most important project yet last week. This time he was playing a role in a real-life engagement story. It was a classic bait-and-switch. Sara, the actress who played Annie in the second Campus Safari video, was asked to rush out to a park in Tallahassee to shoot another video. This time she was to play an adult and would need to be dressed up for the part. Shaun, the man who is now her fiancé, was there waiting for her.

To really sell the scheme Bryan, the director, sent Sara a fake script. He and Zack were at the park shooting this little intro, I presume in order to keep her truly unaware until the moment she saw Shaun. Well done, men. And again, congratulations to Shaun and Sara!

Installing Mac OS X Lion

In this week’s episode I ask that you indulge me as I geek out and talk about my experiences installing Mac OS X Lion on two different Macs. Even if you’re not into that sort of thing, the first story is pretty interesting even without any technical knowledge.

At one point in this podcast I say that I wish my computer was roaring like it used to. I apologize for the unintentional terrible pun.

Just for grins, I counted how many bounces it took for Chrome to open when I went to write this post. It bounced fifty times before opening. Yes, fifty. Ugh.

Your Powers are Weak, Old Man

Over the past two months my long-time friends Rob and Shaun each have gotten engaged. Shaun and I met in ’06 not long before he became a Christian. I met his fiancée Sara her freshman year at FSU while I was helping to lead a guy’s freshman Bible study. Rob I’ve known since I arrived in Tallahassee in ’02. He has been a constant source of encouragement and entertainment to me. I’m sad to say I don’t know his fiancée Jenna well but I hope that changes in the future. Congratulations to each of you!

But here on my blog I always find a way to turn someone else’s big news into something about me. It’s just the way I roll.

Hear me out; I’m not just being narcissistic. Over the past three and a half years I’ve watched four of my then-roommates — Kyle, JD, Joe and Aaron — get engaged while I lived with them. As you might imagine, this has become a bit of a running joke amongst my friends. New roommates are warned that it’s simply a consequence of living with me, that they don’t stand a chance. I distinctly remember Aaron scoffing at the notion when he moved in. Ha! Pwned. (And he’s not complaining.)

Apple OS X Lion Released Today

Today Apple released OS X Lion, the latest iteration of its operating system (version 10.7 to be exact). Much of what Lion brings to the table was inspired by iOS. This version of OS X seems like a bit of a change in direction by Apple, whereas Snow Leopard (version 10.6) was merely a refinement of Leopard (version 10.5, which itself was change in direction as well). I’m interested to see how much I’ll like the new Mac experience.

The truly unique aspect of this OS is the way the upgrade is purchased. All upgrades will be available only via download through the Mac App Store. I don’t think I like the fact that to reinstall OS X from scratch I’ll first need to install Snow Leopard. However, I intend to try out these instructions on how to burn a Lion boot disc as described by The Unofficial Apple Blog, so maybe it won’t be such a big deal for me after all.

My personal Mac might not receive the update for a while. I want to wipe my computer and start from scratch, which will be a bit of an undertaking. I have an up-to-date Time Machine backup but I’m also going to give SuperDuper a try for a little extra insurance. (I also have a Mozy offsite backup of my data and most of my day-to-day files are saved in Dropbox.)

I highly recommend reading this review of Lion by Shawn Blanc (@shawnblanc). Of course, there’s always Apple’s OS X Lion page for the official list of features.

Do me a favor. Buy Lion via this link. It’s an affiliate link, so I’ll get a small kickback if you use it to purchase the OS (about $1 per purchase).

Six Weeks of Busyness

I bet you thought I’d forgotten to post an episode today! I am about to begin the busiest six weeks I’ve had in recent memory. In this episode I talk about all that I have to do during that time.

Every day I read a tremendous amount of content on the web. I can divide this content into two primary categories: (1) content from websites and blogs I read all the time and (2) content from random sources, usually articles shared by friends on Facebook or people I follow on Twitter. For reading the former type of content I use Google Reader and for the latter I use Instapaper. In this post I will show you how I use these two services.
