Bryan Zhang

His Name is Lionel Worthington

What did the world do before it had Lionel Worthington? My roommate Zack has created a monster phenomenon. I really like his supporting cast in this latest installment of the Campus Safari series. My friend Hope does an amazing job. In the span of a couple minutes she goes from terrified to keenly interested, from uncomfortable to sassy. She delivers her final line perfectly. Adrian does an impressive job faking being hungover. At least I think he was faking.

The cast behind the camera is roughly the same. Bryan Zhang is the director and writer. Patrick Gines is the cinematographer. Tyler Sununu, another of my roommates, tries his hand at boom operator.

Turning 28

Today I turn 28. I am waist-deep in my late-twenties. I am growing increasingly aware of the generation gap present when I’m around the college students I work with and minister to. I find myself in more and more conversations that subtly (and not-so-subtly) inquire why I’m not yet married. I’ve had a brooding sense of stagnation, a feeling that only in recent months has begun to lift. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

I went back and read the birthday essay I wrote last year and was struck by just how optimistic my outlook on the year ahead seemed to be. It was the epitome of looking at the glass half full despite my typical proclivity to the contrary. I chose to focus on what was good in my life. It was an especially difficult choice because at that time I was in the middle of some painful and uncertain circumstances. But even in the midst of those events I can remember thinking to myself, “Well, at least things can’t get any worse.” Of that I was wrong.

I will remember the year between my twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth birthdays as the most difficult and most formative year of my life up to that point. It was a year when I came face to face with my demons, my idols, and my savior, none of whom seemed to want to leave me alone. Throughout 2011 I found myself becoming increasingly distraught with disillusionment, losing any sense of direction and understanding of my life that I’d had prior. I experienced God’s discipline and his faithfulness; I found him to be true to his word in ways I’d previously only read about. He fought for me even when all I could do was wait and hope he would come through.

The Curious Case of Lionel Worthington

“I’ve been serious about two things in my life: alcohol safety and Barbara Walters.”

Lionel Worthington just won’t go away. And that’s a good thing. Here he is in the fifth installment of Campus Safari and the second service announcement on alcohol safety. As always Mr. Worthington is played by my roommate Zack Latham. The PSA was written and directed by Bryan Zhang.

As with the previous videos in this series my friends make up the entire cast and crew. Sam, the guy in the elevator with Lionel, is both a Nav and is being discipled by the student who I disciple. There are a few takes of Sam in this video that slay me. Patrick is once again the director of cinematography. Dion tried his hand at boom operator for the first time and, so far as I can tell, did an excellent job.

These videos keep getting better. The production value is much higher than the earliest installments. Although if you listen carefully you can hear Lionel’s accent change from time to time. If you’re curious—and I know you are—the gags about Barbara Walters and the Golden Girls are both inside jokes. I find it hysterical that these jokes made it into a project that someone is actually paying for.

The Revenge of Lionel Worthington

Lionel Worthington is back and better than ever in the fourth installment of Campus Safari. My roommate Zack reprised his role as the awareness avenger. This time he’s advocating alcohol safety. Once again the short film was directed by Bryan Zhang.

Almost everyone else who had a hand in making this film is a friend of mine. Rachel plays the startled woman enduring Lionel’s lesson. Clint is her on-screen and real-life boyfriend. Patrick returns as the man in charge of cinematography.

I was hoping we hadn’t seen the last of Campus Safari. Only three episodes were produced for the Breathe Easy Initiative (plus one special edition film). I’m now expecting many more.

Zack’s Broccoli Birthday Cake

My roommate Zack just celebrated his 26th birthday yesterday. My friend Tyler and I put together a surprise birthday party for him. Zack is a total health nut and would never eat an actual cake. So in an effort to honor him on his birthday we put a bunch of broccoli in a baking pan, then stuck 26 candles in it. He couldn’t stop laughing.

A Letter from a Father

This is a guest post by my friend Bryan Zhang. Bryan is a graduate of the FSU Film School. He’s the director of many short films that have appeared on my blog, including those in the Campus Safari series and the Generations series. Actually, Bryan has shown up in a lot of my blog posts, much as he tends to show up at my house unannounced. If you like this post you should check out his website. You can find him on Twitter as @realbryanzhang.

I’m 22 years old and I have the whole world in front of me. I live in a world of infinite options and possibilities. And I know I’m not alone. My generation is filled with people who look at their future and frown at the gaping question mark. I remember being asked what I would do after graduation. What a horrible question. And we all know the drill for answering that question – put on a meek smile and vaguely reference some “opportunity-somewhere-that-might-work-but-then-again-you-don’t-know-and-then-humbly-say-you’re-open-to-whatever-God-wants-you-to-do- but-you-don’t-really-know-what-that-means-because-you’re-scared-out-of-your- mind.”

I’ve come to realize that God’s not going to spell out my entire life for me. In fact, it really seems like He’s primarily concerned with the work being done in me over the work done through me. So what does this mean? What’s God’s desire for my life?

Spiritual Generations — Erin Garmon

Bryan Zhang has created a new video in his Generations series. The series highlights students and campus ministers in The Navigators who have been impacted by the discipleship of another student or staff. In this video Erin Garmon, a senior at FSU, shares how she was influenced by the discipleship of Haley Liles.

Spiritual Generations — Josh Pratt

At the risk of being completely self-aggrandizing I’d like to share this video with you. As many of you know I am a volunteer campus minister with The Navigators at Florida State University. The Navigators are big on one-to-one discipleship, establishing spiritual generations through one person passing their life on to another. A friend of mine is creating a video series focusing on that vision and how it’s being played out.

Engagement Safari

Watch on Vimeo: Safari Engagement

Lionel Worthington, star of the Campus Safari videos, was part of his most important project yet last week. This time he was playing a role in a real-life engagement story. It was a classic bait-and-switch. Sara, the actress who played Annie in the second Campus Safari video, was asked to rush out to a park in Tallahassee to shoot another video. This time she was to play an adult and would need to be dressed up for the part. Shaun, the man who is now her fiancé, was there waiting for her.

To really sell the scheme Bryan, the director, sent Sara a fake script. He and Zack were at the park shooting this little intro, I presume in order to keep her truly unaware until the moment she saw Shaun. Well done, men. And again, congratulations to Shaun and Sara!
