As you probably know, Apple released version 2.0 of its iPhone/iPod touch software earlier this summer. One of the big new features was the ability to add third party applications to your device. To get these applications a person goes to the App Store, found in Apple’s iTunes software. Many applications are free, but the majority you have to pay for.
Today the blogosphere is abuzz with the news of a new app in the App Store called I Am Rich. The man behind the app is asking $999.99 for his efforts. What does it do? Here’s the description in the creator’s own words:
The red icon on your iPhone or iPod touch reminds you (and others when you show it to them) that you were able to afford this.
It’s a work of art with no hidden function at all.
After pressing the (i) button on the main page, a secret mantra will be shown. This may help you to stay rich, healthy and successful.
So, in other words, it does nothing.
There’s been a wide variety of reactions to this app. Some folks are angry, some find it humorous, and still others wish they’d thought of it first. Personally I was sad to hear about it, but it did get me thinking.
One of the next big steps I’ve decided to take with my blog is to make a concerted effort to bring visitors to my site that don’t know me in the real world. In my latest attempt to drive traffic to my website I’ve added the Facebook application called Blog Networks and created a network page for my blog. People who use the application become “fans” of the blogs they like most. Based on the sites these users pick (and some keywords that I’ve provided) the application recommends other sites to them that they might also like.
If you’re a reader of my content — whether it be through visiting my site, through RSS or via Facebook notes — come show your interest in my writing by joining my blog network. After that, if you’d like to be a big help, become fans of other blogs you like so the application will have some cross-referencing data to work with.
A few weeks back Facebook opened its doors to third-party developers to make applications that would integrate with its new f8 platform. There are now almost 1100 applications floating around for users to add to their profiles. Most of these apps are complete garbage, but a few are worth adding to your profile. Since I spend a scary amount of time on that website it would be remiss of me if I didn’t tell you about the apps which I’ve grown especially fond of.
Before diving into the list let me explain it a little further. These apps aren’t necessarily the best Facebook applications available. I haven’t tried them all, but these are my favorites of the ones I’ve tried. They’re also not the most popular apps out there, but I figure that’s all the more reason to give them a little love. So here they are, in no particular order.
