My Soundtrack for 2009

I really enjoy creating my annual soundtrack. It’s fun to consider the music I’ve been listening to over the course of an entire year and decide what songs best express the seasons I’ve been through. This marks the third such soundtrack I’ve made. (Have a look at the ones from 2007 and 2008.)

I have a few rules when picking the songs for my soundtrack. First, I limit myself to twelve songs, which is somewhat of an arbitrary number. Second, I limit myself to one song per artist. Third, I use both quantitative and qualitative data to make my decision. The quantitative data is how many times I played the song (I use my Last.fm account to keep these stats). The qualitative data is how the song impacted me personally. Finally, I can’t repeat a song from a previous soundtrack. Something else to keep in mind is that these songs weren’t necessarily released in 2009; they are songs that impacted me in 2009. (Also, the songs aren’t ranked; this is how I have them ordered in the playlist.)

Now it is my pleasure to unveil this year’s soundtrack.

My Soundtrack for 2008

All December I was excited to write this article. Sadly, my site was disabled around the beginning of the year so this post was delayed until now. Last year at about this time I created this soundtrack for 2007 packed with the twelve songs that impacted me the most during that year. It’s been one of my most viewed posts since, so I figured I’d create a new one for 2008.

I have a few rules when picking the songs for my soundtrack. First, I limit myself to twelve songs, which was done last year somewhat arbitrarily and this year for consistency. Second, I limited myself to one song per artist. This made for a couple of really difficult decisions, as you’ll soon discover. Third, I used both quantitative and qualitative data to make my decision. The quantitative data is how many times I played the song (I used Last.fm to keep these stats). The qualitative data is how the song impacted me personally. And I added one new rule: I didn’t allow myself to repeat a song from my previous soundtrack. Something else to keep in mind is that these songs weren’t necessarily released in 2008; they are songs that impacted me in 2008. (Also, the songs aren’t ranked; this is how I have them ordered in the playlist.)

Scrubs Season Eight

Last night was the season premiere for Scrubs, now in its eighth season and now on ABC. Since this is one of my favorite shows I’m going to be a little self-indulgent and share with you some links, including some spoiler clips from upcoming episodes. UPDATE: Both of the videos in this post are from episodes that have now aired.

My Soundtrack for 2007

I have noticed that some authors are now including a list of the music they listened to while writing their book (Donald Miller comes to mind). I thought that might be a pretty cool thing for me to start doing. Below is my soundtrack for 2007. Each of these twelve songs has impacted me this past year. I’ve even set up an easy way for you to buy this soundtrack!

A Real-Life Scrubs Proposal

So I was shooting the breeze this morning on MySpace (remember, Monday is my day off) and I found myself on Zach Braff’s profile page. As many of you know I have become a huge fan of his show Scrubs in recent months. On his profile he has this YouTube video clip from a Scrubs rehearsal of a scene I had never seen before (and I’ve seen every episode). But it soon became clear to me why I hadn’t seen it before. Each time I watch this video I smile from ear to ear. Even if you aren’t a fan of the show you’ll like this.

Mark Your Calendars

How great is it that the two days I’ve been looking forward to since the beginning of the summer will take place back-to-back! First of all, on Thursday, October 25 Scrubs will begin its seventh and final season. Remember all the drama from the season six finale? Look for it at 9:30 PM on NBC, right after that other show people seem to like.

Then, on Friday, October 26 at 6 PM the world will at long last have access to Mac OS X Leopard. The announcement was just made today. I didn’t want to buy a Mac before their new OS came out, so now I finally feel the freedom to become a Mac owner.

Now, where will I be during these two events? Well, on Thursday I’ll be wrapping things up at Nav Night after a night of worship, likely making plans to go to Steak & Shake or Coldstone or something like that. Who knows that I’ll be doing Friday, but it won’t involve me being in line for Leopard or my new Mac. You see, the Mac I want doesn’t currently exist, but there are rumors that it will be made in January.

But in spite my lack of participation I’m still really excited!

Where My Ears Have Been

I’ve wanted to write this post for a while but haven’t made the time for it. Since the beginning of the summer I’ve been trying to expand my horizons when it comes to my choices of music. I had gotten myself into a bit of a rut, only listening to the bands and singers I already knew about. You see, I don’t listen to the radio because I can’t stand it. Even Christian radio. Especially Christian radio.

I’ve really soured on the Christian music industry in recent years. I guess I’m just sick of songs fitting into one of two categories: (1) Christian pop that is musically inept and lyrically shallow, or (2) worship music, much of which is either poorly made or just a rehash of a song that’s been recorded by a dozen other artists. Plus when it comes to worship music I don’t like to listen to it unless I’m actually going to be concentrating on God and His character. If I’m just typing away at my desk or I’m hanging out with friends and want some music in the background I don’t want worship music because my attention will be elsewhere.

I’ve recently rejoined the world of secular music. I know, I know. Blasphemy. Don’t worry though, I’m not listening to anything too sketchy. I wanted to blog about some of the great artists I’m now listening to. I’ll give you three names today with more to come later.
