I work for The Marketing Institute at the FSU College of Business. One of our programs is Commuter Services of North Florida, which helps commuters in eight of Florida’s northern counties to find earth-friendly commuting options.
This week is Commuter Choices Week. We’re challenging people to try an earth-friendly commute for at least one day this week (which would include any sort of travel other than driving alone). If you pledge to do so on our website (commuterchoicesweek.org) you’ll be entered to win a number of really cool prizes, including a bike donated by The Great Bicycle Shop of Tallahassee or a new iPod Classic!
There are a number of different events happening in conjucture with Commuter Choices Week, including a kickoff in Kleman Plaza on Monday, October 27. Visit the website or one of the events to find out more.
The summer has ended. Tallahassee has once again been taken over by throngs of college students. Monday, August 25 was the first day of classes at FSU for the fall 2008 semester. I’m amazed at how much can change in a year. Last year at this time I was beginning my first year on staff with the FSU Navigators. I have intentionally kept quiet on my blog about my plans for this fall and beyond, but I’m finally ready to start talking.

It’s been nearly a month since the fall semester ended and I’m still having a hard time believing just how fast those four months went by. Here we are in January, the day before the start of the spring 2008 semester, and I know it’ll be the end of April before I know it. But before I get too far ahead of myself I want to take time to reflect back on the previous semester. It was my first ever as a campus minister. Here’s a little bit of what I learned and some things I hope will be different this time around.

I write this to you from the Orlando airport, where my long layover has just turned into an even longer layover thanks to a half hour delay. I arrived here from Tallahassee at about 3:30 this afternoon. I won’t be taking off from Orlando until 7:55, assuming their current estimate is any good. And I’m not even flying into Hartford. It was cheaper to go through Boston. So when my next flight touches down I’ve still got a long drive home ahead of me. It’ll be well after midnight before I get to bed tonight.

It’s my policy not to blog about what goes on where I work since I know it has the potential to do more harm than good. But in this case I’ll make an exception. I’m still going to be vague though.
Over the past six business days two people I work with have left the department. One of them was my boss. Both of them were men, the only other men besides me in the SHINE program. I liked both of them and I’m sad to see them go. My program only has eleven people in it normally, and we were already down one person, so the loss of two more is a big deal.
I have to admit that I’m a little worried now. My boss was the main reason why I was able to stay on with the department in a part-time capacity starting this August. With him gone and someone else taking his place, presumably from the outside, that arrangement might not still be available. Please be praying that I’ll be able to keep my job at the Florida Department of Elder Affairs in spite of all these changes going on.
To my family and friends,
It’s a pleasure to have the opportunity to write to you all again. It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I wrote to you about graduating from FSU. Now, one year later, allow me to recap the past year and share a little about what I plan to do in the near future.
Since last August I have been working at the Florida Department of Elder Affairs doing data entry. It’s by no means glamorous but it is another example of God’s provision in my life. But it’s now time to make a change. Starting this August I will be cutting back to a part-time job at Elder Affairs and will begin a part-time job with the Navigators, a collegiate ministry at Florida State University. This is the same ministry that I was involved with as a student for four years and as a volunteer leader this past year. Some of you may remember that back in the spring of ‘06 I wrestled with the idea of joining Navigators staff in a full-time capacity. This was once again an option but this time it became clear to me that, while it was the right time to make a change, leaving the workforce entirely was not the right move to make.

Leading Off - I have a major case of the Mondays today. It didn’t come on until after attending a staff meeting not too long ago. I was doing fine. I was actually feeling good. Now I’ve got a headache and I’m wondering if my watch and every other clock in the office is wrong.
Elder Affairs - So as I mentioned in my last update, I went on my very first business trip last week. It was in Tampa and it was for a SHINE leadership meeting. It was… well, let’s see. Fun would be far too strong an emotion. Educational would be an out and out lie. I think the best word would be different. Yeah, it was different, in many ways. I was out of my cube, which I’ve decided is the best part about business trips in general. I was dealing with my coworkers on a quasi-personal way since I ate meals with them and was staying in the same hotel as them. I put faces to names for all the PSA liaisons and many of the volunteers, which was surprisingly enjoyable. I find it strange to correspond with people that I’ve never met.

I’m really tired. I’m not sleepy tired, just physically tired. I feel out of shape too. It’s like this. I’ve been on my feet all day today and yesterday, so my legs and my back ache. But I haven’t done much else, so I feel like I’ve got a ’secretary spread’ happening. It’s pretty gross, but it’s probably all in my head. Either that or it’s all in my gut.
If this job has taught me anything so far it’s that I will never be able to work a 9 to 5 desk job. It’s too boring and stressful all at the same time. What I’m doing I find unappealing and slow, but there’s a lot on the line for my aunt and uncle here, so there’s stress there too.

So I went down to the FSU housing office today to pick up an application to become night staff. Basically I would work the front desk of a dorm in the wee hours of the AM. I’m pretty much a lock for the job. There’s a high turnover rate for night staff. But the only question that’s giving me trouble on the application is this one:
Please list and briefly discuss your past work experiences that are relevant to the Night Staff program. [Emphasis added]
